Greetings fellow Mouse Fans and Happy New Year!
I have had mixed emotions regarding the 122-foot Sorcerer Mickey's Hat since its installation in 2001, in what was then Disney's MGM Studios. I love the sculpture itself with its whimsical ears and swirls of light. It has been the perfect visible meeting spot for many a gathering.
But the location has never made sense to me! Why block the Chinese Theather, one of the most recognizable icons in Hollywood? Sure, put it in the Animation Courtyard! Even at the front of the park! But smack at the end of Hollywood Boulevard?!
So it is with some regret that today I bid a fond farewell to "The Hat." Deconstruction of the hat begins today. It is my hope that Disney is able to find a new location for the hat, perhaps one more in keeping with its "Fantasia" origin.
Be well and make magic wherever you go,
